A blocked pump impeller costs more than a strainer. DIN-standard Y-type strainers protect pump stations from debris damage, here's how to specify the right one for your system.
In any pumped water system, the pump is the most expensive and most vulnerable component. A single piece of debris — a weld slag fragment, a grit particle, or a scale deposit dislodged during commissioning — can score an impeller, damage a mechanical seal, or block a control valve in seconds. The solution is simple, inexpensive, and often overlooked: a Y-type strainer installed on the suction side of every pump.
The Y-type strainer takes its name from its body shape — a Y-profile where the straining element sits at an angle to the pipeline. This geometry offers several advantages over basket or T-type strainers:
Our Y-strainers are manufactured to DIN 86501 (cast iron) and DIN 86503 (ductile iron), with flanges drilled to DIN EN 1092-1. For procurement teams working with county water utilities or KENGEN-affiliated projects, DIN compliance simplifies specification writing and ensures interchangeability with other DIN-dimensioned equipment on site.
The strainer body is available in cast iron (GG25) for standard service and ductile iron (GGG40) for higher pressure or higher impact applications. The screen element is 304 stainless steel throughout.
Our DIN Y-strainers are available in DN40 through DN300, pressure-rated to PN10 and PN16 as standard. For applications above PN16, carbon steel body versions are available to order.
A common mistake is selecting a strainer with the same nominal bore as the pipeline. The correct approach is to size based on the flow velocity through the screen element, not the pipe bore.
As a rule of thumb, specify a strainer one to two sizes larger than the suction pipe when flow velocities are above 1.5 m/s. Our technical team can calculate the correct size for your system based on flow rate and pipe size.
All Emcor Y-strainers are supplied with a bottom blowdown valve connection (DN15 or DN20 depending on body size). This allows the screen to be back-flushed under pressure without taking the pump offline — a critical feature for continuously operated water supply pumps.
Replacement screen elements are stocked for all sizes. We recommend inspecting the screen at commissioning, after one month, and every six months thereafter as a minimum maintenance interval.
DIN Y-strainers in DN40–DN200 are available from stock in Ruiru. DN250 and DN300 are available with a 2–3 week lead time. Contact us on +254 710 353 535 for bulk project pricing and LPO supply.
