Y Strainer PN16: High-Pressure Pipeline Protection for Industrial and Municipal Systems

Operating at 16 bar demands robust filtration. The Y Strainer PN16 handles high-pressure pipelines where standard PN10 strainers fall short, ideal for Kenya's pressurised supply schemes.

Kenya's water infrastructure is under increasing pressure, literally. As urban supply schemes extend to higher-elevation zones, gravity-fed systems build static heads above 10 bar, and booster pump stations push working pressures into the 12–16 bar range. Standard PN10 strainers are no longer adequate for these applications. The correct specification is a Y strainer rated to PN16.

What PN16 Means in Practice

The pressure-temperature rating PN16 means the fitting is rated to 16 bar (approximately 232 PSI) at 20°C. For cold water service, the majority of Kenyan applications, PN16 gives a generous safety margin above typical operating pressures of 8–12 bar.

The PN16 rating applies to the entire assembly: body, cover, bolting, and flange drilling, not just the body casting. Always verify the full assembly rating, not just the body material.

Construction and Materials

Our PN16 Y strainers are available in two body materials:

  • Ductile Iron (GGG40), the standard choice for most water supply applications. Provides the tensile strength and impact resistance needed to handle pressure surges and water hammer events common in pumped systems. Cement-lined internal surfaces available for potable water compliance.
  • Carbon Steel (WCB), specified for industrial process applications, steam service, or where the fluid temperature exceeds 80°C. Compatible with a wider range of stainless steel screen elements.

Screen elements are supplied in 304 stainless steel as standard, with 316 stainless steel available for mildly corrosive service. Mesh sizes range from 0.5 mm to 3.0 mm.

Sizes Available

Our PN16 Y strainer range covers DN50 through DN300 in flanged configuration. Threaded (BSP/NPT) versions are available in DN15 through DN50 for instrument and small-bore service.

PN16 vs PN10, Which to Specify?

Specify PN16 when any of the following apply:

  • System working pressure exceeds 8 bar (to maintain adequate safety margin)
  • The strainer is on the discharge side of a high-head pump
  • The system is subject to frequent water hammer or pressure surges
  • The strainer is upstream of pressure reducing valves or control valves rated to PN16

Specify PN10 when system pressures are reliably below 7 bar and surge pressures are controlled, typically low-elevation gravity supply networks.

If in doubt, specify PN16. The cost difference between equivalent PN10 and PN16 strainers is modest, but the consequence of an under-rated fitting failing under surge pressure is significant.

Installation Notes

Y strainers should be installed with the screen pocket pointing downward in horizontal pipelines, so debris collects under gravity towards the blowdown connection. In vertical pipelines with upward flow, the pocket must point in the direction of flow.

Always fit an isolating valve on the blowdown connection so the screen can be cleaned without shutting down the system.
